Thirty-five years after the execution of the Ceaușescu spouses, their son-in-law, Mircea Oprean, has challenged the legality of the sentence of the Extraordinary Military Tribunal from December 25, 1989, arguing that it was issued without evidence and without the right to appeal. He has requested a retrial and the reconstruction of the case file, which disappeared after the ruling, claiming that the charges of genocide and undermining state power were not proven. Historian Alexandru Groza suggested that the stakes might be the recovery of the family's assets, held by Oprean, including valuable paintings.
