Cristian Romero has been chosen as the new captain of Argentina's national team, following Lionel Messi's retirement from international football. The Atlético Madrid defender will take over the armband worn by Messi for 15 years, starting in 2011, and will lead La Albiceleste during the transition period ahead.

Romero, 28, is one of the key players in the team coached by Lionel Scaloni. The defender has already worn the armband in three matches, against Venezuela, Chile, and Mauritania, while his performances and important role in the dressing room contributed to his selection.

The new captain has 58 appearances for Argentina, four goals, and two assists. He will be tasked with representing the team after the departure of Messi, the leader under whose guidance Argentina won two Copa América trophies and the World Cup. Romero will try to preserve the unity and competitive level of a generation that achieved the most important successes in the recent history of the national team.
