Several dozen senior U.S. military officials underwent polygraph tests at the beginning of this summer as part of an investigation into leaks of classified information about the United States’ stocks of sophisticated munitions. The tests were conducted at the Pentagon and within combatant military commands, including U.S. Central Command.
According to officials cited by CBS News, President Donald Trump was furious after the information appeared in the press. The investigation seeks to determine whether people with access to highly classified data passed information to journalists or acted on behalf of a foreign intelligence service.
The sources say that none of the officials tested failed the polygraph in connection with the alleged disclosure to the press. General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was not among those tested.
In July, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the formation of a joint task force with the Department of Justice to investigate the leaks. The FBI reportedly did not participate in the testing, as the military has its own investigators. The procedure is permitted in certain counterintelligence investigations, but it requires the consent of the person being examined and compliance with legal safeguards.}
