Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon official responsible for military planning, was dismissed after allegedly admitting that, for approximately a year, he had shared classified information about Ukraine and Iran with two journalists. The information appears in an internal investigation report reviewed by Axios.

According to the document, Sylvia began communicating with the journalists in June 2025, and the contacts later continued via the Signal app. At one meeting, held at a restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, the general allegedly verbally shared information about U.S. aid to Ukraine, using notes made while consulting a classified report.

The military official allegedly admitted to the actions in a video recording after failing a polygraph test four times. He cooperated with investigators and provided his personal phone for forensic examination. Investigators suspect that Sylvia intentionally deleted conversations with one of the journalists, although he claimed that the deletion of the history was accidental.

The report accuses him of the unauthorized disclosure of information to the media. His dismissal comes as the Pentagon, led by Pete Hegseth, steps up measures against information leaks and the prosecution of unauthorized sources. The U.S. Army rejected allegations that pressure had been applied to publish a statement in support of the general.

Context: The Pentagon has recently intensified internal controls over information leaks and reorganized the military leadership

Before the dismissal, polygraph tests were conducted at the Pentagon on dozens of high-ranking officials as part of an investigation into leaks of classified information about U.S. stocks of sophisticated munitions. According to information cited by CBS News, Donald Trump was “furious” after the information appeared in the press, and the investigation sought to determine whether individuals with top-secret access had passed information to journalists or acted on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. Sources indicated that none of those tested had allegedly failed the polygraph, and the tests were conducted within army structures.

At the same time, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced a 20% reduction in the number of generals and admirals, presenting the measure as a necessary change to streamline the military apparatus. He also announced the formation of a joint task force with the Department of Justice to investigate information leaks.
