Siegfried Mureșan, co-rapporteur of the European Parliament, announced positive news for farmers and local authorities in Romania, after four months of negotiations with the European Commission. The initial proposal of the EU multiannual budget for the period 2028-2034 did not provide clear funding for rural development and cohesion, limiting itself to direct payments to farmers. As a result of pressure from the European Parliament, the new proposal guarantees a minimum allocation of 10% for rural areas from unallocated funds. Additionally, member states cannot reduce cohesion funds by more than 25% without justification. Mureșan emphasizes the importance of involving local authorities in the design and implementation of national plans, thus ensuring that European funds are directed where they are needed. These changes represent a victory for farmers and regions, ensuring the continuity of European funds for Romania even after 2027.
