PNL Member of the European Parliament Siegfried Mureșan called on Friday, September 4, in Dublin, for a higher level of EU funding for Romania in the European Union’s future budget for 2028–2034. Mureșan was part of the European Parliament delegation attending the meeting between representatives of the European institutions and the governments of the member states.

During the discussions, the MEP argued that the European Union cannot take on more responsibilities, particularly in security and strengthening the economy, while its budget is being reduced. He proposed identifying new EU own resources, including the introduction of a digital tax, which he said could provide predictability and additional revenue without putting pressure on citizens or national budgets.

According to Mureșan, the European Parliament supports increasing the funds allocated to each country, but the governments of the member states have not yet reached a common position. Some net-contributor states want agriculture and cohesion policy to remain priorities, while at the same time calling for a smaller budget to limit national contributions.

The Irish government will be tasked with formulating a compromise proposal following the negotiations. Under the version supported by the European Parliament and presented by Mureșan, Romania’s funding for projects and investments would increase by €6 billion. The amount has not yet been definitively agreed.
