The European Parliament will not approve the European Union’s multiannual financial framework for 2028–2034 if it includes cuts deemed dangerous for Romania or any other member state, MEP Siegfried Mureșan, the EP’s co-rapporteur for the future EU budget, said on Tuesday.
Mureșan said that the Irish presidency of the Council of the EU is expected to present a new compromise proposal by the end of the week, which would then be examined at next week’s European Council meeting. If the document provides for cuts, the European Parliament’s response will be “very firm,” the MEP warned.
According to him, the European Union must allocate more funds to security, defense, competitiveness, agriculture and European regions. “The EU cannot do more with the same budget,” Mureșan said, calling on member states to support a budget higher than the European Commission’s initial proposal.
In the position adopted in April, the European Parliament called for an increase of approximately 10% compared with the draft presented by the Commission in July 2025. By contrast, the EU Council’s draft proposes a 2% reduction.
The EP also supports the introduction of new sources of revenue, such as taxes on digital services, online gambling and capital gains from crypto-assets. The future budget can be adopted only with the approval of the European Parliament, by an absolute majority.
