The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, emphasized, after the summer European Council, that Romania's objective is a larger multiannual budget of the European Union, which would lead to a greater net contribution for the country. In the context of a press conference in Brussels, Dan highlighted the increased flexibility of national plans, which allows countries to define their national programs in the fields of agriculture and cohesion.

Romania also expresses interest in the flexible use of European funds, including extending the period for accessing them. Additionally, the president expressed optimism regarding the funds for competitiveness, which could support Romanian companies and researchers.

Following discussions with the leaders of the member states, it was agreed that the Irish presidency of the EU Council would continue negotiations to reach an agreement on the multiannual financial framework by the end of 2026. The budget proposal presented by the Cypriot presidency includes cuts for agricultural and cohesion funds, but also significant reductions for competition and defense.
