Ilie Bolojan, the dismissed Prime Minister of Romania, discussed during a press conference the necessity of amending the Salary Law. He emphasized that Romania faces disproportionate salary expenses compared to budget revenues, having among the lowest revenues in the EU, but among the highest salary expenses.

Bolojan mentioned that 39% of each leu collected covers salaries in the public sector. He also highlighted that salaries in the public sector increase without taking productivity into account, which deepens the salary gap between the public and private sectors. He proposed that in order to have a sustainable salary law, it is necessary to reduce public spending, including through layoffs, to allow for higher salary increases in the future. Bolojan concluded that without these measures, Romania risks facing severe financial difficulties.
