Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan warns that Romania can no longer afford prolonged political uncertainty and calls for the rapid formation of a government with a sufficient mandate to continue reforms and control public spending.

Bolojan says the budget deficit fell by 37% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period last year. During the same period, public investment reached 76 billion lei, nearly 15 billion lei above the 2025 level, supported in part by European funds. However, the interim prime minister acknowledges that reducing debt-financed consumption has had a contractionary effect on the economy.

He says the future government must change the economic model from consumption to investment, improve revenue collection and maintain budgetary discipline. Romania must reduce the deficit to 5.3% of GDP in 2027 and again in 2028, in a difficult context marked by the disappearance of PNRR grants, increased defense spending, the indexation of pensions and salaries, and high interest costs.

Bolojan warns that abandoning reforms and returning to populist policies could undermine the confidence of investors and lenders, pushing Romania into an even more difficult economic situation. He calls for a responsible prime minister willing to make difficult decisions and commit to a credible governing program.
