Ilie Bolojan warns that political deadlock could drive up interest rates, hurt Romania’s credit rating and delay the budget revision

Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan warns that Romania is facing mounting costs due to the lack of a fully empowered government, during a period marked by domestic and international crises. In a message posted on Facebook, he accuses the “de facto PSD-AUR coalition” of blocking the formation of a new executive and argues that political instability could affect the country’s economy.

Bolojan says that prolonging the crisis could lead to higher interest rates on Romania’s loans. Each additional percentage point could mean billions of lei annually, while the lack of a guarantee regarding the continuity of governance could negatively affect the country’s credit rating and investor confidence.

The acting prime minister points out that a budget revision is necessary, as funds for certain areas, such as healthcare and transport, risk running out before the end of the year. He says that the 2027 budget must also be prepared, but that this depends on continuing administrative reform and reducing state spending.

Bolojan rejects the idea of resigning, arguing that this would further paralyze government activity. To break the deadlock, he calls for the swift designation of a credible prime minister and proposes, as a compromise solution, a technocratic government with limited objectives: the budget revision, the completion of PNRR procedures and the drafting of the 2027 budget.

He says that the PNL previously proposed a governing rotation with USR and UDMR, with Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister, but that the PSD rejected the option. Bolojan says the liberals will not endorse a government politically controlled by the PSD, citing the experience of the former coalition.
