Benone garlic, a Romanian variety cultivated in Râmnicelu, has managed to penetrate the international market, already being available in stores in Israel, where over 20 tons have been sold.
This variety, created by specialists in Buzău, was approved in 2021 and is distinguished by its intense aroma and spicier taste compared to imported garlic. Farmer Vali Jecu, who cultivates this variety, has signed a contract with an Israeli retailer and intends to increase production in the coming years, considering the growing demand. In contrast, Romania is facing an invasion of garlic from China and Spain, with 7,000 tons imported in a single year, while Romanian exports are only 150 tons. Local producers complain about the lack of subsidies and the necessary infrastructure to deliver consistently to large retailers, which makes Romanian garlic become a rarity. Benone garlic is named after Benone Sinulescu, a well-known gardening enthusiast.
