A farmer from Galați County has announced that he is offering the cucumbers from his greenhouse for free to anyone willing to come and pick them themselves, after the selling price fell to 30 bani per kilogram. The producer says the amount does not even cover the harvesting costs.

The farmer made the announcement on social media, explaining that the price of cucumbers had dropped rapidly. About ten days ago, he was able to sell a kilogram for one leu. The price subsequently fell to 60 bani, and has now reportedly reached just 30 bani.

According to the calculations presented by the producer, picking, bags and workers’ wages cost him approximately 50 bani for each kilogram. At the current price, the farmer says he would have to bring money from home to continue harvesting and selling the produce.

“I am offering free cucumbers. Unsprayed cucumbers,” he said in a video posted on TikTok. He explained that the decision was not staged and that he would rather give them away for free to those interested than incur further losses. The farmer says that under these circumstances, growing and harvesting are no longer profitable,.
