Malaysia's Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has announced that the country will not host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the near future because of the 1.5 billion ringgit financial commitment required for a long-term contract with Liberty Media. Also, maintaining the circuit to international standards would require additional costs of about 10 million ringgit annually. Although Malaysia hosted F1 GPs from 1999 to 2017, the withdrawal from the calendar was due to high expenses. However, Yeoh said if the private sector was willing to bear the cost, Malaysia could reconsider hosting F1 races.
