On Thursday, USR parliamentarians met with Michael McGrath, the European Commissioner for Democracy and Justice, to discuss the negative impact of the Justice Laws adopted four years ago on the judicial system in Romania. They emphasized the need for a more stringent evaluation within the rule of law mechanism, considering the closure of hundreds of criminal cases and the tendency to minimize the role of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
Deputy Stelian Ion mentioned that the evaluation of the functioning of Justice was too lenient after the lifting of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM), warning that a weakened justice affects the entire European Union.
Diana Stoica discussed the fragility of democracy and the importance of protecting freedom of expression. USR highlighted the negative effects of the laws, including the concentration of power and a non-meritocratic system, calling for the restoration of the competencies of DNA and DIICOT in combating corruption.
