Context: USR had announced beforehand that it would not support a government associated with PSD and called for reforms
Before the decision of the Political Committee, Dominic Fritz announced that USR was moving into opposition to the PSD government and would closely monitor the Executive's decisions. The position was presented as a reaffirmation of its pro-rule-of-law orientation and of “real solutions” for improving the lives of Romanians.
Subsequently, Fritz stated that the party would propose that lawmakers not vote to invest the Luca Niculescu Government, arguing that stability cannot be used as a justification for returning to an executive that USR associates with wasting public money and protecting privileges. At the same time, the party maintained that it cannot ask citizens to accept “any government, at any cost”.
In the preceding discussions and consultations, USR insisted that it would not enter government if PSD ministers were part of the future cabinet and rejected the idea of a “shield” for the Social Democrats’ return to power.
