USR President Dominic Fritz announced after the consultations with the designated prime minister, Luca Niculescu, that the party will not vote for a government that includes PSD ministers. The statement was made after the meeting between the USR leader and the designated prime minister, amid negotiations to form a parliamentary majority.
Fritz stated that USR is maintaining its commitments made to voters and the position expressed before the motion of no confidence. He argued that PSD is responsible for the political deadlock and rising prices, which is why the party no longer wants to form a government alongside the Social Democrats.
The USR leader nevertheless specified that the party would openly consider the possibility of a government formed by PNL, USR, and UDMR, if it were led by Luca Niculescu.
The statement represents a clear distancing from PSD, but also an openness to continuing negotiations for an alternative government. Political consultations are scheduled to continue on Monday between Luca Niculescu and the Parliamentary Group of National Minorities, the PACE - First Romania Parliamentary Group, and the United for Romania (UPR) Parliamentary Group.
