USR President Dominic Fritz said Tuesday on Digi24 that his party will not support the investiture of a government unless the parliamentary majority on which it is based is clear. The statement concerns the government led by designated Prime Minister Luca Niculescu, amid political negotiations over the formation of a new government team.
Fritz said USR would support from Parliament the solutions it considers good for Romania, but ruled out participation in “backroom deals.” The party leader also criticized the possibility of PSD ministers being part of the government, citing the lack of a clear direction regarding deficit targets and public spending.
USR’s position differs from that of the PNL, which is considering signing a bilateral political agreement with Luca Niculescu to contribute to the country’s stability over the next six months. Fritz said, however, that the two parties can continue to cooperate on a government without PSD and AUR.
The USR leader expressed skepticism that such a government would last six months and reiterated his support for the option of early elections. According to sources close to the Presidential Administration, President Nicușor Dan could initiate the procedure if the parties fail to reach an agreement on investiture.
