USR President Dominic Fritz announced that the party will examine the team and governing program with which Luca Niculescu will seek Parliament’s investiture, but will not support a cabinet that includes PSD ministers or is controlled by the party.
In a Facebook post, Fritz described Luca Niculescu as a respected diplomat, but said that the decision on whether to support the government would be made by USR’s leadership bodies after talks with the designated prime minister. The party leader warned that USR would not vote for a prime minister used as a façade for the PSD’s return to power.
Fritz argued that Romania urgently needs a government, but that the new cabinet must lead the country out of the crisis, not bring back to power those considered responsible for it.
A similar warning came from USR deputy Alexandru-Paul Dimitriu, who said that the main test for the government proposed by Niculescu would be the nomination of the justice minister. He said USR might consider an independent minister unaffiliated with the PSD, but not one considered close to the party, including a technocrat backed by it.
Dimitriu also argued that justice reforms need a stable majority and that a government dependent on PSD votes could be vulnerable to political pressure.
