Siegfried Mureșan refuses to resign his mandate and announces that he will go to vote in Parliament: “If I said that I would not resign my mandate, then I will not resign it”

Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Mureșan announced on Saturday that he does not intend to resign his mandate, despite repeated requests from PSD President Sorin Grindeanu. Mureșan maintains that the procedure for forming the Government must continue until the investiture vote in Parliament.

“If I said once that I would not resign it, then I will not resign it,” the prime minister-designate said in a message posted on Facebook. He added that he would go to the vote in the Legislature and that he was looking forward to presenting his vision for Romania.

Sorin Grindeanu has been asking Mureșan since Monday to give up his mandate if he cannot form a parliamentary majority. The PSD leader cited the urgent need for a government and mentioned as alternatives a new nomination for the position of prime minister or the initiation of procedures that could lead to snap elections. On Friday, Grindeanu again criticized the political positioning of the prime minister-designate and announced that PSD was prepared to discuss the government program, if necessary.

Mureșan was nominated by President Nicușor Dan following consultations with the parties and parliamentary groups. PSD announced that it would not support a government led by him, while the prime minister-designate is negotiating with PNL, USR, and UDMR over the composition of the Executive and the list of ministers. The focus thus shifts to Parliament, where support for the new government will be tested.
