Designate Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan has announced that he will not resign and that he will go to Parliament on Wednesday to present the proposed government’s program and composition. The investiture vote is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the Liberal cabinet needs at least 233 votes to be approved.
Mureșan reacted after the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Sorin Grindeanu, allegedly repeatedly asked him to give up his mandate before the vote. “The institution of Parliament must be respected, not marginalized,” the prime minister-designate said in a message posted on Facebook.
The Mureșan government currently has 170 guaranteed votes from the PNL, USR and UDMR. In a favorable scenario, these could be joined by the votes of all Liberals, the 17 deputies representing national minorities and the 23 unaffiliated lawmakers compatible with the condition imposed by the UDMR: that the government not depend on AUR, SOS or POT.
In this configuration, the cabinet would reach approximately 209 votes, 24 fewer than the threshold required for investiture. Parliament is set to decide whether to grant a vote of confidence to the proposed government.
