PSD MP Lucian Morar announced on Tuesday, at Parliament, that he is separately initiating the collection of signatures for the suspension of President Nicușor Dan. The move was launched following the head of state’s designation and, according to the MP, does not represent the official position of the PSD or AUR’s action.
Morar was accompanied at the statements by Gabriel Florea, AUR’s deputy secretary-general, the party that is also collecting signatures for the suspension. The Social Democratic MP specified, however, that he would use a separate sheet, with his name at the top of the list, and that he hopes other PSD colleagues will also join him.
The suspension of the president requires 155 signatures from MPs. So far, 119 MPs have declared their support for this move on AUR’s list. Lucian Morar is the third PSD MP to support Nicușor Dan’s suspension, after Dorin Popa and Voicu Vușcan, who signed AUR’s sheet.
Morar stated that several Social Democratic colleagues are dissatisfied with the fact that the president did not designate PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu as prime minister, believing that voters’ choice must be respected.
The PSD leadership distanced itself from the initiative. Daniel Zamfir, the party’s Senate leader, said that it was an initiative “as a private individual,” about which the leadership had not been consulted and which he did not consider appropriate in the current context. The choice of MPs who support the initiative is to be discussed within the party.
