The National Permanent Bureau of the PSD will meet on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at the party’s headquarters on Kiseleff Road, to analyze Luca Niculescu’s designation for the position of prime minister and decide whether to grant him political support.
Sorin Grindeanu was the first political leader to react after Niculescu’s designation. He did not immediately reject the possibility of forming a government led by him, but warned that the PSD would not support a continuation of the policies promoted by Ilie Bolojan.
Grindeanu stated that, if the new government follows the same direction, “there will be no other option but early elections.” The PSD leader specified that the party would neither participate in nor give “blank checks” to a political arrangement considered another adventure.
Moreover, Grindeanu appeared very upset in his reaction, saying that this fourth nomination made by the country’s president had nothing to do with “parliamentary mathematics.” On the other hand, Digi24 sources claim that Sorin Grindeanu’s opposition to Niculescu’s nomination was rather superficial, and that the Social Democrats will choose to enter the government proposed by Luca Niculescu with ministers.
Meanwhile, sources cited by Cotidianul reportedly say that “the shock was quite significant,” and that “people in the party were expecting a name from the PSD.” Thus, “the vote is leaning more toward no.”
The PSD is asking the designated prime minister to publicly present the composition and policy directions of the future government, as well as measures to revive the economy, protect purchasing power, and maintain the deficit targets. Tuesday’s meeting will clarify the party’s official position regarding Luca Niculescu’s candidacy.
