Mihai Barbu is under judicial control because he allegedly used his influence to obtain undue benefits. His resignation has also been requested by the National Trade Union Bloc, which emphasized that his retention in office affects the integrity of ARF projects. Additionally, Barbu was the treasurer of PNL, but he was suspended from all party positions following the announcement by DNA.

He was appointed as president of ARF in April 2025, by the decision of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, at the proposal of Sorin Grindeanu.
