The Micula brothers are strengthening their position in the dispute with the Romanian state, hiring the American lobbying firm Saunders Global Diplomacy to advocate in Washington for the enforcement of an ICSID ruling worth hundreds of millions of dollars. A federal court in the U.S. rejected Romania's request to apply the CJEU decisions that prohibited the enforcement of the 2013 verdict, which required Romania to pay the Micula brothers over 356 million dollars in compensation.
At the same time, the companies of the Micula brothers are facing criminal investigations and tax actions in Romania, including suspicions of illicit asset transfers. ANAF has obtained precautionary measures to recover illegally granted state aid. European Food, the brothers' company, accused the press of demonization and contested the allegations.
