Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timișoara and president of USR, is in the final stage of the process of obtaining Romanian citizenship, with a decisive interview scheduled for next week. Although he has been mayor for over five years, Fritz still does not hold Romanian citizenship, having submitted his application last year. After the interview, there will be a waiting period of several months until the oath-taking ceremony. The process of obtaining citizenship is regulated by Law 21/1991, which imposes criteria such as a period of residence in Romania, loyalty to the state, and knowledge of Romanian culture. Fritz's lack of citizenship has generated controversy, but the courts have established that European citizenship is sufficient to hold the position of mayor.
