Bill Ready, the CEO of Pinterest, has made a public appeal to governments to ban access to social networks for users under 16 years old, emphasizing that the current digital environment exposes children to unprecedented risks.

In an opinion piece published in Time, he described today's youth as part of "the largest social experiment in history," highlighting the correlation between unlimited access to social media and rising levels of anxiety, depression, and decreased attention spans.

Bill Ready argued that the tech industry has underestimated these consequences and has not implemented sufficient protective measures. His proposal aligns with a broader global trend towards stricter regulation, with Australia, France, and Germany already taking steps in this direction. Ready compared social media regulation to existing controls in the tobacco and alcohol industries, suggesting that age-based restrictions could significantly reduce harm.

He also mentioned that Pinterest has restricted certain social features for users under 16 years old without affecting the platform's engagement.

The debate on this issue is intensifying in the tech sector and policy circles, with governments showing an increasing willingness to intervene for the protection of youth.
