A team of researchers analyzed images of the sky taken before the launch of the first satellite and identified mysterious transient phenomena that could represent objects floating above the Earth. The study, part of the Vanishing & Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations (VASCO) project, has sparked interest among both UFO enthusiasts and scientists, although the latter remain skeptical.
By analyzing old observations from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, the team discovered that these phenomena, which last less than 50 minutes, do not appear in images taken before their occurrence. A correlation was also observed between these phenomena and nuclear tests, with a higher likelihood of being observed during those periods. The hypotheses range from possible UAPs attracted by nuclear tests to unknown atmospheric phenomena. Although the idea that these objects could be extraterrestrials is extremely unlikely, researchers continue to explore more plausible explanations, such as high-altitude balloons or plate errors.
