OpenAI has announced the launch of the Atlas browser, a move aimed at challenging the dominance of Google Chrome, considering the 800 million weekly users of ChatGPT. Atlas collects data on user behavior and facilitates AI-based search, replacing traditional results with conversational tools. Alphabet's shares fell by 1.8% after the announcement, and Atlas joins other AI browsers like Brave and Opera Neon.
The functionalities of Atlas include a ChatGPT sidebar to summarize content or compare products. In 'agent' mode, ChatGPT can interact with websites to perform complex tasks. The browser is available on macOS, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android to follow. Google is responding by integrating AI into Chrome, but despite the competition, Chrome remains the market leader with a share of 71.9%. Analysts suggest that OpenAI could enter the advertising market, having the potential to take a portion of the search advertising share from Google. The launch of Atlas marks a significant evolution in user interaction with the internet.
