Researchers have identified a group of ancient stars in the Milky Way, which may have originated from a dwarf galaxy called Loki, that merged with our galaxy over 10 billion years ago. The study, led by astrophysicist Federico Sestito from the University of Hertfordshire, suggests that these stars, which are very poor in metals, are remnants of an ancient galaxy, playing a crucial role in understanding the history of the Milky Way and the universe.
Astronomers have identified 20 stars that orbit close to the galactic disk and have used computer simulations to demonstrate that a dwarf galaxy could have dispersed the stars in the observed pattern. The galaxy Loki, named after a god from Norse mythology, represents an important part of galactic evolution, and research will continue to further explore these findings.
