Instagram has announced that it has resolved a problem that allowed hackers to use an AI chatbot to gain unauthorized access to other users' accounts. They could change account passwords by spoofing the location and requesting a change of the associated email. A spokesperson for Meta stated that the issue has been fixed and that the affected accounts are being secured. Claims that the vulnerability was used to access the accounts of world leaders were also dismissed. The incident coincided with the takeover of high-profile accounts, including that of Barack Obama, who posted pro-Iran content before recovery. Jane Manchun Wong, a former Meta employee, reported that her password was changed without her knowledge. This situation raised questions about the effectiveness of AI systems in managing user data security, and users reported a lack of human support in such cases. Meta has been criticized for the lack of assistance in the case of compromised accounts, and recently it has significantly reduced staff in the context of high spending on AI.
