Alphabet, Google's parent company, has decided to withdraw the antitrust complaint filed against Microsoft in the European Union, a week after EU regulators announced an investigation into Microsoft's cloud computing practices. Google had previously accused Microsoft of anti-competitive practices that would lock customers into its cloud platform, Azure. Currently, Amazon dominates the cloud computing market with a 30% share, followed by Microsoft with 20% and Google with 13%. Giorgia Abeltino, senior director for Google Cloud Europe, stated that the withdrawal of the complaint aligns with the European Commission's assessment of problematic practices in the cloud sector. The investigation could lead to Microsoft and Amazon being designated as 'gatekeepers' under the EU's Digital Markets Act, imposing obligations aimed at opening the market to competitors.
