Envoys of U.S. President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have arrived in Moscow for talks on ending the war in Ukraine. The two are due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and present the Washington administration’s latest peace proposal.
Russia is the U.S. delegation’s first stop. After their meetings in Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner are expected to discuss the matter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, September 6. The plan’s contents have not been made public.
Donald Trump said at the White House on Friday that the United States has “an idea for peace” and that his envoys could have a “great chance” of reaching an agreement. The U.S. president described Witkoff and Kushner as exceptional negotiators and said they were trying to determine whether ending the conflict, now in its fifth year, was possible.
The Kremlin, however, remains skeptical about diplomatic progress. According to Bloomberg, cited by the Kyiv Post, sources close to Russia’s leadership consider the chances of the visit producing results to be “extremely low.” Moscow maintains that previous rounds of negotiations did not lead to tangible progress and does not expect proposals acceptable to the Kremlin.
