The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that he is prepared to organize presidential elections, but emphasized that they can only take place if two essential conditions are met: the security of voters and soldiers, considering the missile attacks, and a legal framework that guarantees legitimacy in the context of martial law. Zelensky responded to a request from the United States for the organization of elections. He also mentioned that organizing parliamentary or local elections is not being considered at this time.
Regarding the voting of Ukrainians abroad, Zelensky expressed support for the introduction of remote voting, but acknowledged that a consensus has not been reached in parliament for amending the electoral legislation. A recent poll shows that the majority of Ukrainians believe that elections should only take place after a peace agreement is signed and the war with Russia is concluded. Zelensky called for the help of the United States and European partners to ensure the security of the elections, stating that, with adequate assistance, Ukraine could be ready to organize elections in the next 60-90 days.
