Volodymyr Zelenskyy conditions the cessation of attacks on Russian infrastructure on Moscow’s reciprocity, contradicting Donald Trump

Ukraine is prepared to halt attacks on energy facilities and critical infrastructure in Russia, but only if Moscow does the same and there are guarantees that the agreement will be respected, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday. Kyiv’s position contradicts Donald Trump’s claim that the two countries had already reached an agreement.

Zelensky said Ukraine was not convinced that Russia would honor such a commitment and called for concrete details from its international partners. He said an agreement must be reliable, long-term and have a real impact on the population.

Trump had said that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy facilities. The US president had previously urged Zelensky to abandon strikes on Russian facilities that produce diesel fuel.

The Kremlin welcomed the appeal, while Kyiv argues that Russian refineries are legitimate military targets because oil revenues finance the war. Drone attacks have reduced Russia’s fuel production and caused shortages. The disagreements come amid global pressure on energy markets, further intensified by the conflict in the Middle East.
