The Telecommunications Department of India has issued a directive requiring WhatsApp Web users to log out every six hours, starting from November 28. This measure aims to combat digital fraud and unauthorized access to accounts. According to the new rules, the application will cease to function if the user changes or removes the SIM card used for registration. Re-authentication will require scanning the QR code each time. The directive must be implemented within 90 days, and platforms must submit progress reports in the next four months.
User reactions have been negative, with many expressing concern that this rule will affect productivity at work. Critics have also raised privacy issues, fearing that linking applications to the active presence of the SIM card will extend government surveillance over communications. Users who travel frequently are also worried that using foreign SIM cards could render their accounts inoperable. The implementation of this measure raises questions about its effectiveness in reducing fraud versus its impact on users.
