Romanians are becoming increasingly frequent victims of fraud through WhatsApp, according to the report of the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC) for 2025. Scammers build trust relationships with victims, often claiming to be employees of banks and informing them about suspicious transactions. Once they gain trust, they convince them to install remote access applications, allowing them control over the devices.

In serious cases, victims are persuaded to take out loans or withdraw large sums of money to deposit at cryptocurrency ATMs. Another frequently used method is taking over the WhatsApp account by obtaining the verification code or scanning a QR code.

Experts recommend not to provide verification codes and to verify money requests through phone calls. Activating two-factor authentication and avoiding remote access applications are essential protection measures.
