Ukraine recently conducted the first flight test of the FP-7.x surface-to-air missile, developed by the local manufacturer Fire Point, as a more affordable alternative to the Patriot defense systems. In the context of Russia's constant attacks, Kyiv is seeking solutions to protect its cities.
The FP-7.x missile is designed to counter threats from ballistic missiles and drones, with an estimated cost of $700,000, compared to $3.8 million for Patriot. Production could begin in August, and Fire Point is collaborating with European partners for the components of the Freyja system, which includes radars and command technology.
Although the FP-7.x missile could complement Ukraine's defense arsenal, experts warn that it cannot completely replace advanced systems like Patriot. Ukraine continues to face challenges in obtaining effective defense systems, and the rapid development of the FP-7.x could be a necessary response to current threats.
