Ukraine recaptured 282 square kilometers of territory from Russian forces in April and May, according to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). This marks a significant change, considering that Russia had been gaining ground monthly since October 2023, but began to stagnate at the end of 2025.
In March, Russian gains drastically decreased, and in April, the area controlled by Moscow shrank by 120 square kilometers for the first time in two and a half years. Although the Ukrainian recaptures represent only 0.07% of Ukraine's total territory, they suggest a positive trend. Ukraine's drone attack campaigns have limited Russia's ability to sustain its positions.
Currently, Russia occupies approximately 19% of Ukraine, with most of the conquests occurring in the first weeks of the invasion.
