Ukraine will request compensation from Russia of 43 billion dollars to support post-war ecological reconstruction, according to statements from Ukrainian officials at the UN Conference on Climate Change. The concept of "conflict carbon" is used to describe the significant climate impact of war, including greenhouse gas emissions generated by the destruction of forests and infrastructure. The Russian invasion has led to emissions equivalent to 236.8 million tons of carbon dioxide, affecting the entire Europe. Ukraine intends to submit the compensation claim to the Council of Europe in 2026, setting a precedent for state responsibility regarding climate damages caused by armed conflicts. The war has deteriorated biodiversity and reduced the capacity to absorb greenhouse gases, having a devastating impact on the environment.
