Tucker Carlson, a former Fox News host and one of Donald Trump’s prominent supporters, said in an interview with NPR that the US president should have been removed from office immediately by his own administration under the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution. The statement came amid the war between the United States and Iran and Trump’s recent remarks about the possibility of destroying the regime in Tehran.

Carlson particularly criticized the president’s threats to use nuclear weapons, saying they pose a threat to all of humanity. Asked by journalist Steve Inskeep whether he was referring to the 25th Amendment, Carlson answered in the affirmative and argued that the vice president and Cabinet members should have intervened.

The comments followed Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly, where he warned that he could “annihilate” the Islamic Republic of Iran if a peace agreement was not reached. The US president also suggested that a potential agreement could be concluded after the US midterm elections, scheduled for November.

The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members to declare that the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. The president may contest the decision, and Congress may be called upon to resolve the dispute. So far, there is no information that the Trump administration or Cabinet members have initiated a procedure in this case.
