In an unusual move, several officials from the Trump administration, such as Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, have moved into housing designated for military personnel in the Washington area. Hegseth lives in a house in Fort McNair, paying a rent of $4,655.70 per month. These relocations, although not without precedent, are less common for such a large number of high-ranking officials. The reason for these moves may be related to the increasing security threats, including recent violent incidents targeting political officials. For example, former White House advisor Katie Miller had a disturbing encounter with a stranger who was following her. This polarization of society has led officials to seek additional protection by moving to military bases, where they benefit from enhanced security. Recent changes in threat assessment, including assassination attempts and political violence, have led to an increased demand for military housing, which has depleted the available stock for high-ranking officers.
