Lord Alan Haselhurst, former Conservative MP and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, died on Tuesday at the age of 88. Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle described him as a 'distinguished and respected parliamentarian', while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he would be 'deeply missed, especially on the opposite benches'. Haselhurst was MP for Saffron Walden from 1977 to 2017, after being initially elected for Middleton and Prestwich in 1970. He became Deputy Speaker and Chair of the Ways and Means Committee in 1997, and in 2018 he was made a life peer.
