The war in Iran could cost American taxpayers much more than official estimates, according to an analysis by Harvard professor Linda Bilmes. She estimates that U.S. expenses will reach approximately one trillion dollars, with short-term costs of about 2 billion dollars per day, over the course of the 40 days of active conflict.

In the first six days of the war, the Pentagon reported expenses of 11.3 billion dollars, however, Bilmes suggests that the actual figure could be closer to 16 billion, due to discrepancies in cost reporting. Long-term costs include infrastructure reconstruction and benefits for affected military personnel, which will put additional pressure on the national budget.

The White House has requested a significant increase in the defense budget, and these expenses will contribute to the growing fiscal deficit and national debt, which currently exceeds 31 trillion dollars. Bilmes emphasizes that these costs will affect future generations, considering that the U.S. is borrowing at high interest rates to finance the war.
