The administration of American President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on two judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) due to their involvement in the case against Israel. These sanctions come after, in November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense chief Yoav Gallant for war crimes in the Gaza conflict. So far, the Trump administration has sanctioned new judges and prosecutors of the ICC, threatening with additional restrictions if the court does not drop the charges against Israeli leaders.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the sanctions target judges Gocha Lordkipanidze and Erdenebalsuren Damdin, accused of involvement in the investigation and prosecution of Israeli citizens without Israel's consent. These measures restrict travel and access to assets in the U.S., thus affecting the daily activities of the judges. The ICC condemned these sanctions, considering them a blatant attack on its independence and a risk to international legal order. Although the U.S. and Israel are not members of the ICC, the Palestinian territories were accepted as a member state in 2015. The Netherlands, the host of the ICC, also condemned the sanctions, emphasizing the importance of the unrestricted functioning of international courts.
