The U.S. Supreme Court ruled, by a vote of 6-3, that President Donald Trump exceeded his legal authority when he imposed global tariffs, thereby undermining his signature economic policy. The court determined that the use of a federal law to impose "reciprocal tariffs" and customs duties to combat fentanyl trafficking was not justified.
Although the justices did not rule on the right of importers to refunds, lower courts will need to clarify this aspect, and refunds could reach up to 170 billion dollars.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh warned that the refund process could become complicated. The White House announced that it would seek legal alternatives to replace these tariffs, although the available alternative options are limited.
