A number of 25 U.S. states has filed a lawsuit in court at the U.S. International Trade Court, challenging the new global tariffs of 10% and 12.5% applied to imports from 60 trading partners. The plaintiffs argue that these tariffs exceed the legal authority of the president and accuse the administration of having abusively used Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to reintroduce taxes previously annulled by courts. The states claim that the investigations regarding the targeted economies were conducted hastily, without the necessary legal consultations and without adequate justifications.
Through this lawsuit, the states are seeking to block the tariffs, annul them, and refund the customs duties already paid. This is the second legal action against the new tariffs, after a group of small businesses challenged the measure, arguing that the administration cannot reintroduce taxes invalidated by the courts.
