The United States government admitted, in a court document, that it was responsible for the fatal collision on January 29, 2025, between an American Airlines passenger plane and a Black Hawk helicopter of the Army, which resulted in the deaths of 67 people. In the 209-page document, attorneys for the Department of Justice stated that the government had a duty of care towards the victims, which it violated, causing the accident. The crew of the Black Hawk helicopter, which was conducting a training mission, failed to maintain a safe visual separation from an approaching American Eagle flight to runway 33 of Reagan National Airport. Additionally, an air traffic controller was identified as partially responsible for the accident, as he violated visual separation procedures. The investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board is ongoing, and final results are expected before the anniversary of the accident. The parents of the first officer of the American Eagle flight claim that their son followed all necessary procedures before the collision.
