A jury in the U.S. has ordered Boeing to pay $29 million in damages to the family of Michael 'Mick' Ryan, an Irish engineer with the UN, who died in the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 crash that occurred on March 10, 2019.

The civil lawsuit was filed by Ryan's widow, who was an employee of the World Food Program and the father of two children. In that crash, 157 people lost their lives, including 21 UN staff members who were traveling for the UN Environment Assembly.

Boeing acknowledged that the MCAS flight control software contributed to the crashes, which led to dozens of civil lawsuits, most of which were settled amicably. This case is part of a series of litigations related to the crashes of the 737 MAX 8 aircraft, and after this trial, only two lawsuits remain active. Boeing's criminal liability was withdrawn in November 2025.
