At a press conference in New York, Tom Fletcher, head of the UN Humanitarian Operations, highlighted an era marked by brutality, impunity, and indifference. He denounced the rising violence, including killings and sexual violence, and criticized the indifference towards human suffering. Approximately 240 million people urgently need assistance due to conflicts, natural disasters, and climate change. The UN is requesting 33 billion dollars to support 135 million vulnerable people by 2026, but due to cuts in American aid, it has adjusted its plans to 23 billion dollars to help 87 million people.
Fletcher mentioned that the 2025 humanitarian appeal was funded with only 12 billion dollars, the lowest level in the last decade. In 2026, priority crises include Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine. The UN will seek the help of governments and civil society to improve humanitarian funding, emphasizing that only a small portion of global military spending is needed. Fletcher called for a redistribution of resources, urging for increased spending on humanitarian aid.
